FAQs
Booking & Appointments
Questions we often get asked
Q1:Do I need a GP referral to see a psychiatrist?
In most cases, no GP referral is required to book a private psychiatric appointment at Surrey Psychiatry. Patients can contact us directly to arrange an assessment. However, referrals from GPs, therapists, schools and other healthcare professionals are also welcome.
Q2: How do I book an appointment?
You can contact Surrey Psychiatry directly by phone, email or through our website enquiry form to arrange an appointment or discuss the most suitable service for your needs.
Q3: How quickly can I get an appointment?
Appointment availability can vary, but we aim to offer timely access to psychiatric assessments and ongoing support wherever possible.
Q4: How long are appointments?
Appointment lengths vary depending on the type of consultation. Initial psychiatric assessments are typically longer to allow time for a thorough evaluation, while follow-up appointments focus on ongoing support and treatment reviews.
Q5: Do you offer online psychiatry appointments?
Yes. We offer secure online psychiatric consultations for adults, adolescents and children across Surrey and the UK, allowing flexible access to specialist mental health care from the comfort of your home.
Q6: Do you charge cancellation fees?
We require at least 7 days notice if you wish to cancel your psychiatry appointment. If not sufficient notice is provided, then the full consultation fee will be charged. There is a non refundable £200 for all new patient psychiatry appointment cancellations and a non refundable £100 for all follow-up appointments.
Assessments & Treatment
Questions we often get asked
Q1: What happens during an initial psychiatric assessment?
Your first appointment involves a detailed discussion about your symptoms, emotional wellbeing, medical history, lifestyle and personal experiences. This helps your psychiatrist gain a full understanding of your needs and recommend appropriate treatment options.
Q2: Can psychiatrists prescribe medication?
Yes. Our psychiatrists are medically qualified doctors and can prescribe medication where clinically appropriate as part of your treatment plan.
Q3: Do you offer medication reviews?
Yes. We provide ongoing psychiatric medication management and reviews to monitor effectiveness, side effects and overall wellbeing.
Q4: Do you provide therapy as well as psychiatry?
Yes. Surrey Psychiatry offers therapy and psychological support alongside psychiatric assessment and medication management, providing a holistic approach to mental health care.
Q5: What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors specialising in mental health who can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication and oversee treatment plans. Therapists focus on talking therapies and psychological support to help individuals manage emotions, behaviours and life challenges.
